Indeed, the Mac App store is positively packed with free games, and you can pick up some amazing Mac games elsewhere that are great fun to play without paying a penny. This is a shame, because the Mac is a great games platform with plenty of excellent freebies. You know best what you're looking for in a game.Apple fans are used to free gaming for the iPhone and iPad, but tend not to think so much about free games for macOS. That way you get to play both, you're not putting all your eggs in one basket so you're less worse off if you find you don't enjoy one of the games, and if you do find you enjoy Rome 2 there's bound to be another sale in a few months when you could pick up some of the DLC cheap as well.īut really up to you. That said, if you're trying to decide between this and Age of Empires 2 Definitive, may I suggest an alternative might be to buy both games without buying any DLC.

You have quite a few Greek/Hellenic factions in the base game, but some people really want to play those named ones.Īnother possibility would be Desert Kingdoms just because you get 4 quite different factions. Of them, Greek States is popular as many people seem to want to play Sparta, Athens or sometimes Epirus. If you did want to pick up something I'd probably go for a Culture Pack or two as they add extra factions to play as in Grand Campaign (and so what is probably the most common multiplayer setting too.) Of the DLC none immediately spring to mind as being siege specialists. I agree with nw60623 that the base game has plenty of content to be getting on with, especially as you don't even know whether you'll like the game or not. (Note: Mac users can't use Desert Kingdoms, Empire Divided or Rise of the Republic because Mac users are still on Patch 17.)Įmperor Edition is a rerelease that accompanied the Patch 15 Major Overhaul, rather than a Game of the Year edition.
